The Atlantic Table

From the embers of the Bay of Biscay to the terraces of the Douro.
16 days · 15 nights 5 bases · 2 countries Fly into Porto, home via Madrid Zero driving Aug 1–17 · Semana Grande

This is one trip with one obsession: the Atlantic coast's genius for taking a perfect ingredient and barely touching it. Anchovies and a guindilla pepper on a toothpick. A turbot over coals. Salt cod a hundred ways. Cider caught from a barrel; Txakoli poured from above the glass; Port aged in a lodge across a river. The thread runs unbroken from the Basque Country down to the Douro — two cultures that share a sea, a love of grilled fish, and a complete lack of pretension.

The plan is built for great days, not just great meals. Each base gets a page below — its geography, its neighborhoods, what to do, what to eat, and a directory of where to actually go, all flagged for a solo traveler. Read the city pages before you arrive; on the ground, follow your appetite.

Orientation

How the trip flows

You fly into Porto and ease in — three nights in the city, then up the Douro for one night of vineyard decompression, then back to Porto for a single buffer night before flying onward. A short hop carries you across to the Basque coast and San Sebastián — five nights timed for Semana Grande, with a coastal day trip to Getaria. Then south to Rioja Alavesa for wine country, and a calmer finish in Bilbao (Guggenheim) before an early flight home through Madrid on Monday. No car the entire way — the Douro train, one short flight, buses, and a private wine-country driver.

Solo note. This is one of the easiest great solo-food trips anywhere: pintxos bars, grills, tascas and markets are built around standing at a counter, where a party of one is completely normal. English is widely spoken throughout, and all of it is safe and walkable.
