Getting your bearings

Half an hour west of San Sebastián, Getaria is a tiny fishing-and-wine village curled behind a hooked headland — the Ratón, "the mouse," that shelters its harbor. It does two things supremely well: it grills whole fish over coals on the street, and it makes Txakoli, the slightly fizzy local white whose vines tumble down to the sea. It's also the birthplace of Cristóbal Balenciaga, whose museum sits above the town. Sea, fire, wine, design — all in a few cobbled blocks.

This is the day that proves a great food day is also a great day. The centerpiece is lunch; everything else — the harbor, the vineyard, the museum, a beach — wraps gently around it. Nearby lie the long beach of Zarautz and the dramatic flysch cliffs of Zumaia if you want to extend the loop.

The grilled-turbot lunch

A Txakoli winery

1 hr · before or after lunch

Txomin Etxaniz or Gaintza — vineyards on slopes running down to the Cantabrian Sea, and the theatrical high pour. Book a short visit.

Harbor & old town

45 min · any time

Wander the steep lanes, the fishing port, and the church where the cobbled floor slopes like a ship's deck.

Zarautz & Zumaia (optional)

add 2–3 hr

Extend west to Zarautz's long surf beach, or to Zumaia's layered flysch cliffs — a geological marvel and a great walk.

Pace the day. A big grilled-fish lunch means a light dinner — back in San Sebastián, just a couple of pintxos and a Txakoli. Don't try to stack two feasts.
