Less than two hours south of the coast, the green Atlantic gives way to the dry, vine-striped basin of the Ebro, watched over by the limestone wall of the Sierra Cantabria. This is Rioja Alavesa, the Basque-administered, most scenic corner of Spain's most famous wine region. Its capital, Laguardia, is a car-free medieval town on a hill, honeycombed beneath with centuries-old wine cellars. Scattered around it: Elciego, home to Gehry's titanium Marqués de Riscal; and a Calatrava-designed winery, Ysios, rising from the vines like a wave.
Twenty minutes south, across the river, sits Logroño — the livelier capital of La Rioja proper, and home to Calle Laurel, the legendary tapas street. You don't drive here: a private driver brings you down from San Sebastián and on to Bilbao afterward, so you can taste freely in between.
