Orientation

Getting your bearings

Bilbao bends around the Nervión river. On the east bank sits the medieval Casco Viejo — the "Seven Streets," the old town where you'll eat and wander. West of it spreads the 19th-century grid of Abando and the Ensanche, the commercial center with its broad Gran Vía. Follow the river northwest and you reach Abandoibarra, the regenerated waterfront where the titanium Guggenheim anchors a parade of Gehry, Foster, Calatrava and Pelli. Above it all rises Artxanda, the hill with the funicular and the city panorama.

It's compact and flat along the river — easy on foot, with a sleek tram gliding the waterfront and a Foster-designed metro if you need it. Three nights gives you two full, unhurried days — and a calm finish before the early flight home.
